WHY: Designated in 1966, Estero Bay was the first aquatic preserve; this event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Florida’s statewide aquatic preserve program. Florida now boasts 41 aquatic preserves encompassing over 2.2 million acres which are maintained in their essentially natural condition for the enjoyment of future generations.
PROCEEDS: Benefit science education programs provided to Lee County students, science based internship programs and community outreach activities within the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve and Estero Bay Preserve State Park.
The dinner and silent auction will be the culmination of statewide events to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Florida’s aquatic preserves and acknowledge the citizens involved in the grassroots movement to protect Estero Bay over 50 years ago. A historical retrospective, oral history footage and keynote speakers will take you back in time through the rich history of Estero Bay and the aquatic preserve program. Renowned photographer and longtime friend of the aquatic preserves, Clyde Butcher will be in attendance and all guests will receive a signed poster commemorating the 50th Anniversary; ready for framing.
